An accurately placed Executive PA or Business Assistant should double the productivity of the Boss they work for! An excellent chemistry must exist between the Exec PA and the senior management team. Often the most talented senior executives in a business do not have the time or perhaps the ability to constantly massage relationships around them, a good Exec PA can help here greatly. So a team player but someone with outstanding initiative much of which will have been gleaned from experience is vital.
There are several different types of Exec PA depending on the business in which they operate. Sometimes we are asked to provide a person who will take over all the “personal” side of a very senior executive’s life, on other occasions that senior executive already has someone appointed to that role and he needs a “Business Assistant”. Often it may be a mix of these two roles that is asked for. However, in every case they must be proactive to their boss’s needs!
To get the critical match right here it is important not only to consider the content of the work carried out by the employer but to look honestly at the physical requirements of the job. For example, many people in top drawer management positions work far longer hours than 9 to 5 and have times where there has to be an “all hands to the pump” attitude. So Exec PAs are expected to give a tremendous commitment level to their job and this needs to be carefully analysed to be certain that it will really suit them to do this.
